Do you love to immerse yourself in the local culture when you travel?
Do you appreciate the simple life?
Do you want to experience the real Cretan lifestyle?
Are you looking for a totally unique experience, far away from the all-inclusive hotels and made in china souvenirs?
Come to the village of Avdou and learn the art of relaxation and authentic living.
Get the opportunity to live in a home that's over 100 years old in one of the most beautiful and charming villages in Crete.
Can you imagine this home 100 years ago? Seeing only the subtle glow of the candles, sleeping near the donkeys, and cooking with real fire.
This home was originally built by my husband's grandfather and although it now has modern conveniences (wifi, oven, fridge, washer...) the energy and beauty has not changed at all.
The feel of the home is a infusion of our roots, like a California meets Crete boho vibe. Find hand painted art, local pottery, vertical succulent gardens, beautiful photography, crocheted wall hangings, statues, and antiques throughout this home.
We want you to come inside and have all of your problems melt away...
The living room features reclaimed wood sofas, an antique flour sifter chandelier, handmade dream catchers out of Cretan lace, lots of art, and Greek statues painted in modern colors like chartreuse and pale pink. You can easily find yourself lounging for hours in this room!
The kitchen has everything you need to create a delish dish... fully stocked with pans, utensils, plates, bowls, and of course, olive oil. There's a large table in the kitchen to enjoy your meals and also the patio outside.
The downstairs bedroom features beautiful woodwork, high ceilings, a custom rustic-chic chandelier, a working fireplace, and a cozy bed to rejuvenate in.
The bathroom downstairs is highly functional despite it's limited space. It features a tiled shower, toliet, and sink in this cozy area. Once summer comes around, we personally love to drive the 6 miles down to the Mediterranean and cleanse in the healing salt waters. Doesn't that sound like the perfect way to start your day?
The upstairs guest bedroom has a separate entrance through the outdoor hallway along with two patios to enjoy the mountain views. It features a large bed, reclaimed crate shelving, a wood ceiling, a comfy sofa, a highly efficient stove, and beautiful artwork.
The house is nestled within the heart of the village where you will discover the charming locals going about their daily lives. Coffee gatherings, family dinners, music, and socializing abound here.
What your guests will love about your neighborhood
The beauty of this village is the combination of ruins, old buildings, faded wood doors, new stone houses, and modern villas. Walk down any street and feel like you have just taken a step back in time. See the old women crocheting outside their homes, the men gathering for cards and raki, and the children playing about the streets without a care in the world.
The village has both old and new generations living together. Younger educated greek families have purposefully chosen this village to put their roots down and live in harmony with nature. The village features a local market where you can buy the basics, a butcher to order organic meat from, and a baker to get the tasty fresh bead from. There's also three cafes (all which have wifi) to order traditional food and coffee from. About a mile walk from the village is a inspiring spot with amazing food which overlooks the avdou.
There's four churches within walking distance and some date back the the 14th century.
Feeling adventurous? There's a beautiful church inside the cave of Agia Fontini. it was also a popular hideout during the revolution.
Do you like to hike? Crete is also known as "the island of herbs" and you will see why if you decide to hike the surrounding mountains of Avdou.
The village is an ideal location to feel worlds away from modern culture yet, in reality you're only 45 minutes away from Heraklion and 25 minutes away from Hersonissos.
