UDINE AND FRIULI Located between the Adriatic sea and the Alps, Udine is a wonderful city with a long interesting history. The center of Udine is dominated by its Castle, built by Venetians from 1517, which houses one of the most ancient Parliament Halls of Europe. The city main square is Piazza della Libertà, dating 16th Century, with its town hall Loggia del Lionello, in Venetian-Gothic style, opposite to Torre dell’Orologio. Two small medieval canals flow through the town centre, sometimes hidden underground and other times making attractive additions to the townscape. Udine is located in the heart of Friuli Venezia Giulia region, between the Adriatic Sea (45 km) and the Alps (40 km), just off the borders with Austria and Slovenia. It is very conveniently located to visit some of northern Italy's most popular destinations: Venice, Trieste, the sunny Adriatic beaches...are all just about 1 hour away. It can, for example, be a quieter and cheaper base from which to visit Venice with ease and tranquillity! Venice Airport (VCE) can be reached by car in about 70 minutes, or by train in about 90 minutes. The nearest airport is Friuli-Venezia Giulia (Trieste) Airport (TRS), 25 miles away. There's a direct bus from the airport, or you can reach it by car in about 35 minutes.
Some of the surrounding area, including Grado (an old adriatic sea village) and Aquileia (an ancient roman capital, Unesco World Heritage Site), can be visited by public transport, using SAF buses or the private little Udine-Cividale railway line, which runs to the picturesque Lombard town of Cividale del Friuli, a great day out from Udine just 12 km far from it. But Friuli means not only sea and ancient towns, but also food and wine delights: you can discover different wine production areas, for example the famous Collio area (20 km) with a lot of value white wines to enjoy, or the San Daniele Village (25 km), where you can find a great ham production. Anyway, we will be happy to help you suggesting routes dedicated to culture, food and wine!
