A small paradise: removed from the world, it’s a place to simply be happy
"Oyster-Catcher Cottage" is situated above a forest-lined estuary in the tiny, picturesque, seaside village of Papatowai. Papatowai is a highly scenic two hour drive from either Dunedin or Invercargill on the Southern Scenic Route, highway 92, which winds along the South East Coast of the South Island. The cottage is very private, cosy and comfortable, and surrounded by mature forest trees. From the deck there are pretty glimpses of the sea through the forest. New Zealand bird life abounds and you will wake to the sound of bellbirds chiming in the trees outside your window. Numerous forest walks leave virtually from your door, and the walk to the forest-fringed estuary and ocean beach (where it is not uncommon to see seals) takes literally a minute. The cottage is simply and tastefully furnished and has one large bedroom with a double bed, and provision for another fold-away single bed. The kitchen/living room has a comfortable, modern double sofa bed suitable for two people. Visitors enjoy the use of a bath as well as a modern shower. The toilet is separate. The balcony opens off the living room with views over the forest and sea. There is parking beside the house. Heating is electric. If you smoke, we ask that you do so only outside.
A small shop and cafe are in the village, as well as a lovely children's playground just minutes from the house.
Papatowai village is right in the heart of the scenic Catlins Forest Park. Rare flora and fauna can be viewed within a short drive from the house. Sea caves, bush walks and waterfalls are all close by. Quality cafes can be found 20 minutes drive north and south of the village. The area is popular with bird watchers, surfers, fishers and all those who enjoy peace and tranquility.
