The capital of Norway, Oslo is a fairly small city with approximately 600,000 inhabitants. Oslo's most notable claim to fame is the proximity to nature. 20 minutes on public transport brings you into the wild, with opportunities for skiing and hiking, and in the summer the small islands in the Oslo fiord are a short ferry ride away. There are a number of decent restaurants in the city, but Oslo is not spectacular culinary-wise, especially if you are on a budget. The nightlife and cafes are rather good, though, with most spots being within walking distance of each other, or not longer than a short taxi ride away.
Oslo is conveniently located in the centre of Scandinavia. Gothenburg is 3 or 4 hours away by bus or train, and you can travel to the west of Norway (where the really grandiose nature is), Bergen, Stockholm and Copenhagen by bus, train, plane or boat.
