Close to historical Old San Juan
Puerto Rico is not large (30 miles x 100 miles) and is full of interesting and historical places to visit. Kayaking in Puerto Rico is wonderful and it can be done in several places such as Vieques and Fajardo where you will be exposed to the island's reefs,, mangroves, lakes, rivers and, above all, incredible bioluminescent bays. It is an unforgettable experience when you see your oars glow neon green in the water! Fajardo Beach has a wonderful set of rustic kiosks serving tasty local food such as alcapurrias, bacalaítos, pasteles, and empanadillas. These meat- and vegetable- filled turnovers and fritters represent Puerto Rico's greasy, crispy, artery-clogging contribution to fast food. Also, El Yunque National Forest is a couple of miles inland from Fajardo and is the only tropical rain forest in the US. If you like to trek, this is the place to go. www.yelp.com/biz/el-yunque-rainforest-luquillo. The interior has coffee plantations as well as extensive caves systems. As part of your trip, I would suggest that you either consider adding a week and chartering a crewed sailboat from either Puerto Rico or Tortola, British Virgin Islands or taking a Caribbean cruise (150 departures) from the San Juan's port .
